Haines, AK and more adventures.
August 8th, 2014 We had barely finished breakfast when I said I was going to scout out the campsites along the lake. I was hoping one had opened up so we could get a grand view along with a nice quiet site for our $10/night fee. IN no time I was back telling Bob to get moving. One perfect site was open. We moved over and claimed this one for our final 3 nights in Haines.
We headed off toward town. Just a short ride later, just past where the river flows out of the lake, several cars had pulled over and a small crowd was gathering.
There was a large bear (a sow) in the river. It was at the spot where a weir was placed across the width of the river. This weir inhibited the fish from continuing upstream enough so that a person from Fish and Game could count the incoming salmon. At some point they are allowed to freely pass.
The bear was on the upriver side of the weir. It did manage to catch and eat two fish while we were there. I got some great pictures. She climbed out of the river and we began to head into town again.
On the way about 4 1/2 miles out, we stopped at the Ferry Dock. They were to update our info in their computer and print our tickets. They measured our rig and said we were 21 not 23 feet as I had reserved. This got us a $220 refund. I didn't understand it but who were we to argue. (We thought it was closer to 22 and 1/2 feet.)
In town we tried to get new fuses in the 15 amp outlet. The new fuses did not solve the problem. We will have to use our charger only when the truck is in motion. And that means we probably won't be using the crock pot any more until the situation is remedied.
We spent most of the afternoon at the Library. I needed the time and electricity to post updates to my blog. When we returned to the campsite the bear was off somewhere else. We heated our leftover Chicken Fried Rice into a Progresso Chicken and Rice soup and it was "souperb!"

We stayed in the same campground and actually got a picture of a Brown Bear and Bald Eagle in the same frame. This has to be one of the most scenic campgrounds along with an abundance of wildlife that we've ever seen! Another great blog! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThe eagles are in the tree tops just watching. They haven't lined up together yet, but I keep hoping for a dozen more bears to arrive. So far over 95,000 pink salmon have passed through the year. It is an even numbered year (2014) and that means a larger year for pinks, They are due to arrive in great numbers in just a few days. Hopefully before our ship leaves dock tomorrow night at midnight. (we will be getting in line between 5 pm and 10 pm) and out of internet signal again until late Tuesday afternoon.
