Matanuska Glacier
July 27th, 2014 we had traveled the past few days from Seward through Wasilla, then Palmer and headed east on the Glenn Highway. We had to pick up supplies. Included was cold remedy for Bob who is not happy about having his second cold for the summer! And also the fish from our fishing trip all vacuum sealed and flash frozen. A special Thank You goes out to Bill and Trudy along with Dave and Pete and of course Captain Bob. Bill had a very impressive machine to pack the fish and preserve it's freshness. Dave fillet all the fish and Pete skinned it too. These fellas also caught the most and biggest ones. We are very grateful!
We spent the next few days heading towards Valdez. The Glenn Hwy is a beautiful winding mountain road. It follows the Matanuska River for about 50 miles as it flows through the Chugach Mountains. We stopped at several pull-offs for pictures of the magnificent views. At mile 101 we came to the Matanuska Glacier state Campground. From the Day use lot there are great views of the glacier and surrounding mountains. At the terminus of the glacier, it is about 4 miles wide. Apparently this glacier has not receeded much in the last 400 years. It was only 4:30pm but we decided this would be a good place to spend the night. We found a nice site in the campground ($15) and settled in for a relaxing night.

In 1986 my National Guard traveling buddy, Paul and I hiked into the Matanuska Glacier to check out a small yellow Piper Cub plane crash. The plane was not actually in the Glacier, but in the tailings. It was a neat experience at the time. I'll always remember the gravel road cut on the edge of a dirt cliff and wondering if it would holdup until we drove by! Again I am so envious about the time you are spending in Alaska! ~~ Live the Adventure!!
